Our goal at the Oakwood Road church of Christ is to wholly follow Jesus in our lives and to simply be Christians. We acknowledge that the Bible is a complete and perfect book which contains everything we need in reference to what God demands from us and how we should live (2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:3). We also understand the need to focus on Jesus as He is revealed in Scripture because He is our perfect example (1 Corinthians 11:1; Hebrews 12:1, 2).
Worship and Bible Study
We have regularly scheduled Bible classes on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. These classes are designed for all ages from babies and toddlers all the way up to adults. There is a special college class plus two women’s and one men’s adult Bible study. Our worship services, which are held on Sunday morning and evening, are designed to praise God and to strengthen and encourage those who are present. In our services we have men who will lead us in praising God in song, praying to God, communing with God and one another as we take the Lord’s Supper, give of our means, and learn from God’s Word. It is our desire to worship God in “spirit and truth” as Jesus said we must in John 4:23, 24.
Our congregation is led by elders who are also described in the New Testament as shepherds, bishops, pastors, and overseers (1 Timothy 3:1-7; 1 Peter 5:1-3). They desire to help the church grow and mature through the use of life groups. We presently have our congregation divided into six groups. These groups exist to encourage one another within the group, to help other members of the congregation, and to reach out to those in the community with various needs, especially spiritual. These groups presently meet on the second Sunday night of each month following our Sunday evening worship service. We encourage all our members to participate in these groups.
We try to give our young people as much help and encouragement as possible. We realize there are many difficulties and challenges which our youth face. It is our goal that by providing our young people with encouragement and opportunities they can grow and mature into faithful adult Christians. We have a monthly devotional and/or activity for our teens. Our pre-teen group, the Acorns, is quite active in service and benevolence projects. In addition our young people are involved in the Lads to Leaders program which is designed to help young people develop leadership skills and faithfulness to Christ. Many of our young people also attend West Virginia Christian Youth Camp each summer where their faith and love for God is encouraged and developed. Many lifetime friendships and relationships are forged during these summer weeks.
